The United Nations declared the decade 2005 – 2014 as the Decade for Education for Sustainable Development. As a response to this, Kenya has developed an ESD Implementation Strategy that provides guidelines for its implementation across all sectors. ESD implementation in Kenya's teaching and learning institutions is an ongoing process with indications of it having been there even before the decade but not explicit. This paper describes research undertaken to monitor and evaluate the implementation of ESD in teaching and learning institutions in Kenya. This was done through the administration of questionnaires to institutions throughout Kenya. An analysis of both the qualitative and quantitative data indicated that ESD exists in our teaching and learning institutions but there is need for more integration in the curriculum. The findings also indicated that there is need for capacity building of teachers on environmental education with a focus on sustainable development.
